Dresses in Literature: Imprudent Purchases edition

0

When did the “imprudent vain purchases” trope stop being so prevalent in stories meant for girls? I seem to recall rather a great deal of it in Alcott (Eight Cousins, bit Women) however I don’t believe I’ve seen it in contemporary YA books. Is it the credit rating culture? as well numerous vampires? people having actual sex? Or have I only been reading apocalyptic–YA? Not as well numerous descriptions such as this in those books:

Now Grandmama is a extremely prim old lady, wonderful as well as neat, as well as dainty as can be, however still rather accurate as well as seriously ordinary in everything; as well as this frivolous, fussy bit costume, with its low-cut neck, trimmed with numerous rows of dainty lace, as well as bit much more than a few flounces of lace to serve as sleeves — no, nothing about the bit gown seemed whatsoever like the Grandmama we know.

Anyway, this picture comes from a story called “The Pink Gown” in an problem of St. Nicholas.
